STEP 5:
Build the Right Initial Team

Entrepreneurs need to find co-founders who are similarly motivated while also complementing their abilities and experience. Step 5 provides guidance on assembling a founding team that’s greater than the sum of its parts. Think of it like drafting an all-star lineup: each player brings unique and powerful skills. Individually, you’re impressive. Together, you’re unstoppable.
You’ll need to evaluate potential team members not only on their expertise but also on their alignment with your mission and their ability to handle the rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship. Some founders may want to go it alone, and in rare cases, they may succeed, but having a team is invaluable. At some point in the journey, your co-founders will inevitably need to pick up the slack when you’re busy with other tasks or even life obstacles outside of venture, and vice versa.
At the start, the important thing is finding the right fit and testing that fit through meaningful experience working together to advance the venture. Later, you’ll need to formalize your co-founder relationships, including equity splits, roles, and responsibilities, so that everyone is clear on what they’re bringing to the table and what they’re getting in return.
A strong team dynamic can make or break a venture. By the end of Step 5, you’ll have the foundation to build a core team that’s ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
